Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), is one of the most common causes of vaginal discharge, and is an overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. BV does not normally cause any associated symptoms of itching or soreness around the vagina or vulva, unlike some of other causes of vaginal discharge such as thrush, and the discharge from BV is normally a pale grey-white colour with a strong, fishy smell.

Bacterial Vaginosis is caused by the overgrowth of more than one bacteria, which occur naturally in the vagina and provide a vital defensive function against other more harmful germs such as candida (causes thrush).
